Detroit Lions in a rush to usher in new era with talented defensive front

The Vikings have won 12 straight games at home over the Detroit Lions, but if this year is any different, the Lions' ability to get to the quarterback will be a big reason.
The Lions lead the NFL with 10 sacks behind rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Such and ends Kyle Vander Bosch and Turk McBride.
"I think their defensive line sets the tempo, maybe for the nfl jerseys
whole football team," said Vikings coach Brad Childress, who has four straight wins over the Lions. "They are playing at a high level. ... High-motor guys all the way along."
Despite the success up front, the Lions have the league's 30th-ranked defense thanks to a secondary that gives up 304.5 passing yards per game. Vikings quarterback Brett Fare would love to exploit the Lions' secondary after throwing four interceptions through the first two games.
The Lions appear rejuvenated after years of ineptitude, losing to the Bears and Eagles by a combined eight points in the first two weeks.
"We feel like this is the new era of the Detroit Lions," Vander Bosch said.
Head issues: The migraines are back for wide receiver Percy Hardin, who missed Wednesday's practice because of the recurring headaches.
Hardin is also suffering from a strained hip that has him questionable for Sunday.
Hardin spoke earlier this month about conquering the migraines with his doctors after the problem persisted for years. Hardin said he suffered from sleep apnea, which affected his heart rate at night and prompted him to sleep with a breathing device that was expected to ease his migraines throughout the day because of proper circulation.
Doctors discovered the sleep apnea while Hardin was in the Dallas Cowboys jersey
hospital after collapsing on the Vikings' practice field Aug. 19 after a reaction to migraine medication.
Childress said it's too early to know whether Hardin and his doctors are better equipped to manage the migraines once they occur.
"Not enough evidence so far. We'll see," Childress said.
Other injury news: Cornerback Chris Cook fully participated in practice for the first time since tearing his meniscus on Aug. 28.
Cook looks like a realistic option to play Sunday. The Vikings are playing with three healthy cornerbacks -- Antoine Winfield, Lit Sheppard and Asher Allen.
Wide receiver Bernard Berrien (knee), linebacker Ben Leer (knee) and cornerback Cedric Griffin (knee) were limited in practice. Berrien is a new addition to the injury list.
Leer said after practice he would be ready to play Sunday.
Fourth down, revisited: After reviewing the tape, running back Adrian Peterson said he wasn't pleased with his angle on a fourth-and-1 stuff that cost the Vikings a late touchdown in Sunday's 14-10 loss to the Dolphins.
With 2:21 left from the 1-yard line, Peterson took a handoff right and tried to spin back to the left after the Vikings tight ends were blown off the ball.
"If I could have stretched it out, if I was a step more, I could have kept it outside and ran to the pylon," said Peterson, who finished with 145 yards and a touchdown. "I made my decision; I've got to stick with it."
Two plays earlier, on an "inside zone" play from the 4-yard line, Peterson slipped in the backfield and "would have walked in the end zone" without the fall.
"I'm very critical of myself, and those are things that I'm going to Chargers jersey
eliminate," Peterson said.
Briefly: The Vikings released tight end Mickey Shuler from the 53-man roster to make room for receiver Hank Basket. Shuler could be added to the practice squad as early as today.
