Thursday Notebook Returning Linemen to Rotate; Ware Limited

IRVING, Texas - While it looks like both Kyle Kosher and Marc Colombo will be back in action for Sunday's game with the Bears, it doesn't mean we won't see some of the backups as well.
Head coach Wade Phillips said on Thursday the nfl jerseys
Cowboys will likely rotate both guard Montréal Holland and tackle Alex Barron on occasion, mainly to give some rest to two players who haven't played in a month.
"Both of them practiced today and they weren't limited," Phillips said of Colombo and Kosher. "It looks good for them. But they wouldn't play the whole game I don't think. We would have to substitute for them for precautionary reasons because they haven't played a whole game in a while. We'll have the other guys to play. Hopefully, we'll have both groups to play."
Phillips wasn't specific in how the Cowboys might substitute the backup linemen, something that is rather unusual.
"You have to have a feel for the game," Phillips said in deciding when to rotate players.” When a guy has been injured, it's a different. But there still is a feel for it. We have to look at it, no matter how fresh they say they are, we do have to do it for them."
The head coach did recall that Doug Free played some at right tackle in Colombo's first game back from injury in last year's playoff game, although the lopsided second-half score might have played a factor in that decision.
Obviously, Phillips isn't too worried about playing Barron, who struggled last week with the three holding penalties. The head coach said he's liked the way Barron responded this week in practice.
Limited Return for Ware
Just like Phillips expected the day before, Demarks Ware was back on Minnesota Vikings jersey
the practice field Thursday, and despite being limited, all signs point toward him playing this week against the Bears.
Ware was held out for precautionary reasons on Wednesday, giving the All-Pro outside linebacker and extra day after he suffered a head and neck injury against the Redskins Sunday night. Ware said he would've returned to the game had the defense gone back on the field.
The Cowboys have always treated head and neck injuries with extra caution, especially considering Ware had the scary moment against the Chargers last season when he was carted off the field on a stretcher with his neck stabilized. Ware returned to action the next week in New Orleans, and earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his two-sack, two-forced fumble performance in the Cowboys' big upset.
Leon Williams Ready
Leon Williams knows how to stay patient. Steelers jersey

The Cowboys' inside linebacker spent the 2009 season with the New York Sentinels of the United Football League while waiting for another NFL opportunity. Inactive in Week 1, the fourth-year veteran is preparing to play on multiple special teams units Sunday in place of injured rookie inside linebacker Sean Lee (hamstring).
"That's what I'm focused on because I know that could change the game," Williams said. "Coach Joe (Decimally), he tells me all the time to make sure that I'm up on everything and know that I can make an impact on special teams."
Head coach Wade Phillips said outside linebacker Brandon Williams also is a candidate to be active Sunday, but he's leaning toward Leon because he also plays Lee's position on defense. Phillips has said Lee likely won't play.
Rally Day
Saturday's walk-through practice at Cowboys Stadium will be open to the public as part of "Rally Days" that are new to the stadium this year.
Starting this Saturday, the Cowboys will host four pep-rally-like events at Indianapolis Colts jersey
Cowboys Stadium as part of a guided tour. The tours are $27.50 for adults, $22.50 for kids, seniors and military. Self-guided tours are $17.40 and $14.50 with limited access to the field.
The tours will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including autograph opportunities with former players such as Walt Garrison, Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Rocket Is mail this weekend.

Detroit Lions in a rush to usher in new era with talented defensive front

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The Vikings have won 12 straight games at home over the Detroit Lions, but if this year is any different, the Lions' ability to get to the quarterback will be a big reason.
The Lions lead the NFL with 10 sacks behind rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Such and ends Kyle Vander Bosch and Turk McBride.
"I think their defensive line sets the tempo, maybe for the nfl jerseys
whole football team," said Vikings coach Brad Childress, who has four straight wins over the Lions. "They are playing at a high level. ... High-motor guys all the way along."
Despite the success up front, the Lions have the league's 30th-ranked defense thanks to a secondary that gives up 304.5 passing yards per game. Vikings quarterback Brett Fare would love to exploit the Lions' secondary after throwing four interceptions through the first two games.
The Lions appear rejuvenated after years of ineptitude, losing to the Bears and Eagles by a combined eight points in the first two weeks.
"We feel like this is the new era of the Detroit Lions," Vander Bosch said.
Head issues: The migraines are back for wide receiver Percy Hardin, who missed Wednesday's practice because of the recurring headaches.
Hardin is also suffering from a strained hip that has him questionable for Sunday.
Hardin spoke earlier this month about conquering the migraines with his doctors after the problem persisted for years. Hardin said he suffered from sleep apnea, which affected his heart rate at night and prompted him to sleep with a breathing device that was expected to ease his migraines throughout the day because of proper circulation.
Doctors discovered the sleep apnea while Hardin was in the Dallas Cowboys jersey
hospital after collapsing on the Vikings' practice field Aug. 19 after a reaction to migraine medication.
Childress said it's too early to know whether Hardin and his doctors are better equipped to manage the migraines once they occur.
"Not enough evidence so far. We'll see," Childress said.
Other injury news: Cornerback Chris Cook fully participated in practice for the first time since tearing his meniscus on Aug. 28.
Cook looks like a realistic option to play Sunday. The Vikings are playing with three healthy cornerbacks -- Antoine Winfield, Lit Sheppard and Asher Allen.
Wide receiver Bernard Berrien (knee), linebacker Ben Leer (knee) and cornerback Cedric Griffin (knee) were limited in practice. Berrien is a new addition to the injury list.
Leer said after practice he would be ready to play Sunday.
Fourth down, revisited: After reviewing the tape, running back Adrian Peterson said he wasn't pleased with his angle on a fourth-and-1 stuff that cost the Vikings a late touchdown in Sunday's 14-10 loss to the Dolphins.
With 2:21 left from the 1-yard line, Peterson took a handoff right and tried to spin back to the left after the Vikings tight ends were blown off the ball.
"If I could have stretched it out, if I was a step more, I could have kept it outside and ran to the pylon," said Peterson, who finished with 145 yards and a touchdown. "I made my decision; I've got to stick with it."
Two plays earlier, on an "inside zone" play from the 4-yard line, Peterson slipped in the backfield and "would have walked in the end zone" without the fall.
"I'm very critical of myself, and those are things that I'm going to Chargers jersey
eliminate," Peterson said.
Briefly: The Vikings released tight end Mickey Shuler from the 53-man roster to make room for receiver Hank Basket. Shuler could be added to the practice squad as early as today.

24 sep 10 Dolphins’ Crowder returns to practice

Indianapolis Colts jersey
DAVIE, Fla. (AP)—Miami Dolphins inside linebacker Channing Crowder(notes) practiced Wednesday for the first time since Aug. 17, giving a boost to a defense that has allowed only 20 points in two games.
Crowder remained limited because of cheap nfl jerseys
a groin injury, and it’s uncertain whether he’ll play Sunday against the New York Jets. But coach Tony Sparano said it was good to have the talkative linebacker back.
“The stretch lines were a little quiet for a while, and that changed today,” Sparano said. “It was good to see him run around out there and to get a chance to be involved, and it was good for Channing, too. There was good progress today.”
Rookie defensive end Jared Odrick(notes), who sat out Sunday’s game at Minnesota because of a hairline fracture in his right leg, did not practice but rode an exercise bike. Starting guard John Jerry(notes) was absent because of an illness.
Browns RB Jerome Harrison(notes) (thigh) and WR Brian San Francisco 49ers jersey
Robiskie(notes) (hamstring) sat out practice Wednesday, according to the official injury report.
Harrison, the Browns' starting running back, leads the Browns with 85 rushing yards, while Robiskie, listed as a starter at wide receiver, has two catches for 18 yards this season.
Two players who have started both games this season — OLB Matt Roth(notes) (foot) and ORG Floyd Womack(notes) (knee) — were limited in practice. ILB D'Qwell Jackson(notes), who has started every game in which he has played but has missed the first two contests with a chest injury, was also limited.
QB Jake Delhomme(notes), whom head coach Eric Mangini said Buffalo Bills jersey
would sit out Wednesday, indeed did not practice. ORG Shaun Lauvao (ankle), TE Evan Moore(notes) (head), CB Derrick Roberson(notes) (hip), NT Shaun Rogers(notes) (ankle, hip) and DE Robaire Smith(notes) (ankle) also didn't practice.
OLG Eric Steinbach(notes) (thigh) and OLT Joe Thomas(notes) (elbow) participated fully.

Peyton Hillis Is a Beast: So Why Don't The Cleveland Browns Use Him?

Colts jersey
As a high school senior in Arkansas, Peyton Hillis ran for 2,631 and 29 touchdowns on 261 carries. That year he won the Landers Award, which is given to the top high school football player in the state of Arkansas.
He chose to play football for the University of Arkansas, where he was cheap nfl jerseys
used more as a lead blocker for Darren McFadden than as an actual running back. The Razorbacks would never use him as a featured back. Even with a very limited number of carries (4.7 per game), Hillis was able to make an impact. His average yards per carry during his career as a Razorback was 4.7 and he scored 12 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 11 touchdowns.
In 2008 he was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Once again, Hillis was used sparingly for much of the year. That is, until injuries forced Mike Shanahan to give Hillis a more prominent role. Over a four-game stretch toward the end of the year, Hillis carried the ball 57 times for 305 yards and five touchdowns. In a game a couple weeks prior to that outburst, he caught seven balls for 116 yards and a touchdown.
An injury prematurely ended Hillis's rookie campaign, but Denver fans were Dallas Cowboys jersey
excited to get him back for the next season. Enter Josh McDaniels. Hillis carried the ball 13 times in his second season, and first under McDaniels. He was packaged in a trade for Brady Quinn the following offseason.
Hillis outperforms Harrison and is a more versatile back. He can block, catch and run for power much better than Harrison. Coming out of college, Hillis ran a 4.57 second 40-yard dash while Harrison ran a 4.47. So, Harrison is a bit faster.
All around though, Hillis brings more to the table. The Browns offense is more effective with him than it is with Harrison.
Peyton Hillis has proven multiple times that he has what it takes to be an elite running back at any level. So why don't his coaches utilize his talent?
In today's world, there is a stigma that follows white athletes everywhere they go. They are considered slower and less athletic than their African-American peers before they're even given a chance to prove otherwise.
It's common knowledge that a white man cannot play running back, wide receiver or cornerback: the "skill positions". There are players who are proving this wrong, but the stigma is still there.
We want to believe that we are a society that has come beyond racial issues. The simple fact of Chargers jersey
the matter is, we aren't. These racial stigmas are all over sports: white man can't jump, black men can't play quarterback or hockey, etc.
Scouts, coaches and management all over the world of sports still include race as part of their evaluation of talent. That practice should have become outdated long ago. A blind assessment made on the basis of one's skin color is unfair to the player and the fans.

Cowboys plummet in Power Rankings

Colts jersey
The NFC East has long been the darling of ESPN.com's weekly Power Rankings, but there's been a disturbing shift this season. The division nearly always features a team in the top 10, but the Dallas Cowboys' 27-20 loss to the Chicago Bears caused panelists to lose patience and drop them a startling nine spots. The Washington Redskins now hold the highest ranking in the Beast for the first time in years.
NFC West blogger Mike Sando has taken the mystery out of football jersey
the voting process and given us a front-row seat to how much John "The Professor" Clayton loves Mike Shanhan's team. Now let's break it down team-by-team and see which panelists deserve the most angry reader comments on their respective blogs:
14. Washington Redskins -- The Skins held steady at 14 despite their late collapse at home against the Houston Texans. Actually, I don't have a huge problem with that result. If they win that game, a No. 12 ranking was probably in order. I think the other voters are starting to catch up with Clayton in terms of showing more respect for Washington. In fact, AFC North blogger James Walker gave the Skins a higher ranking (13) than Clayton (14), which raised eyebrows at Redskins Park.
16. Philadelphia Eagles -- This seems about right. The Eagles moved up two spots from last week following their 35-32 road win over the Lions. Now everyone's waiting to see what the Eagles will do with Kevin Kolb back in the saddle. AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky is bullish on the Eagles with a No. 12 vote but Walker canceled him out by leaving the Eagles at 18. That was one of the bigger voting discrepancies and I've asked Billy Barnwell and my Football Outsiders pals to look into this issue. Perhaps Walker needs to look at more variables.
17. Dallas Cowboys -- This was the second biggest drop of Minnesota Vikings jersey
any team in the league. Only the Vikings suffered a more embarrassing fall. Sando still sees something in this team with a No. 14 ranking, but Kuharsky has completely bailed with a 19 on his ballot.
19. New York Giants -- I think almost any team in the league was going to get punished in a Sunday night game in Indy with the Colts coming off a humiliating effort in Houston. I'm almost willing to give the Giants a pass in that game and it looks like Clayton sort of agrees with me. He gave the Giants their best score at 16 but Kuharsky and Walker, both resentful of the NFC East's rabid fan base, had them at No. 20.
However, we’ve got one newsworthy development. John “The Anchor’’ Clayton didn’t weigh the Saints down this time. He finally joined the other voters and put them at No. 1, where they belong.
It’s actually a good week for the rest of the NFC South because the gap between the Saints and everyone else isn’t quite as wide as it was a week ago. Atlanta came in at No. 10. With a big game at New Orleans on Sunday, the Falcons probably have a chance to jump close to the top five, maybe even crack it, with a victory.
The undefeated Buccaneers are No. 21. I actually thought the Bucs might crack the top 20 and I’m surprised to see them sitting a little below some winless teams like Dallas and Minnesota. But I understand the skepticism because this winning thing is so new for the Bucs and it’s not like they’ve knocked off any heavyweights yet.
But they’ll have a chance to do that Sunday, when they host the Indianapolis Colts jersey
Steelers, who are No. 5 this week.
Carolina has fallen to No. 28, which seems about right. But the Panthers should give thanks that the Lions, Browns, Rams and Bills still are in the league.

NFC East High Energy Player of the Week

Colts jersey
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick's body language never changed when the Detroit Lions took a 17-7 lead in Sunday's game. In fact, he seemed to look calmer once the Eagles were in comeback mode.
Quite simply, Vick was the best player on the field in Sunday's win and you nfl jerseys
could tell that his teammates fed off his energy. Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham didn't attempt to keep Vick in the pocket. He dialed up the blitz over and over, in part, because of the Eagles' issues on the offensive line. Vick managed the game beautifully and seemed to know exactly when it was time to run.
He passed for 284 yards and two touchdowns while ripping off some remarkable spin moves to extend plays. On Sunday, the Eagles showed that it pays to have one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league on the roster. Coach Andy Reid called it a "beautiful" thing to have two quarterbacks he trusts to win games. Sunday's game served as a nice audition for Vick as he determines what the future holds. He'll be starting in the league next season, but I don't think it will be in Philly. Here's what Vick's mentor Tony Dungy said about him Sunday night on NBC per the Daily News:
"These last two games, he’s been outstanding," said Dungy. "He’s thrown the ball from the pocket well. He’s managed the game. He’s run when he needed to. I thought he played the quarterback position better these two games than he ever did in Atlanta."
Vick will not be able to pick up his High Energy Player of the Week Cowboys jersey
award in person, but I assume he's thrilled to be honored.
Allen couldn't break into the starting lineup unless there were injuries. He was a heck of a special-teams player, though. So the Dolphins took what they could get and kept him around.
But the Dolphins made a surprise decision right before the season started. They named Allen a starting cornerback. The move seemed to reflect badly on incumbent starter Sean Smith more than it was considered a story of perseverance for Allen.
By now, you probably know Allen had the greatest game of his disappointing career Sunday. He intercepted Brett Favre twice in the second half to help the Dolphins win 14-10 in the Metrodome.
Jason Allen had a bigger game than Jared Allen. Jason Allen was credited with 11 tackles and three passes defensed.
Miami coach Tony Sparano revealed Monday that no defensive player graded out higher than Allen did against Minnesota.
Allen has bounced around from cornerback to safety to nickelback and special-teams ace and never seemed at home. Sparano said assigning him one job has turned out well.
"He's got outstanding athleticism and ometimes that can get Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
you caught in trying to get him to do too many things," Sparano said. "So from our end we needed to back off of that and we needed to say 'OK, this is what we're going to ask this guy to do.' It's what we've done, and the kid has really grown, I think, as a player."

Will Delmon Young's home-plate shove stir Twins-White Sox rivalry?

Colts jersey
When Delmon Young face-washed White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski on Tuesday night at Target Field, it boiled up a little bad blood in an American League Central rivalry that has seemed a little too congenial recently.
Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen swore before Tuesday's game between first-place Minnesota and his second-place White Sox that his team hates the Twins.
"It's not a friendly rivalry. I hate them," Guillen said. "As soon football jersey
as the game starts, we hate each other. They're my friends, I talk to them before the game, I talk to them after the game, I always have a smile with Gardy and the coaching staff. But as soon as the game starts, we're not friends anymore."
That seemed apparent Tuesday when Young, running from third on an apparent contact play in the eighth inning, was thrown out at the plate by second baseman Gordon Beckham. Young, who was dead to rights, didn't even try to score, instead veering left and shoving Pierzynski in the face.
The move was in retaliation for a Sergio Santos pitch that nearly beheaded Twins shortstop J.J. Hardy in the top of the inning.
"I was just so hosed I couldn't slide," Young said.
So much for mutual respect.
"It's intense once the games get going," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Steelers jersey
before the game. "We like beating them and they like beating us, and that's a good rivalry. We play them a lot. ... It's not like we're throwing at them and they're throwing at us, like we hate each other, but we like to beat each other -- probably a little more than other teams."
The Twins hold a 9-4 series advantage, and a four-game lead in the Central, with five games left between the teams.
Twins first baseman Michael Cuddyer said it was clear Santos wasn't trying to hit Hardy.
"If there are repercussions, I'm sure it will be against Delmon," he said. "If that comes tomorrow or later, who knows?"
Hunter famously -- or infamously, depending on where you hail from -- bowled over Burke while tagging up from third in a 6-2 victory in 2004. That lit a fire under the series for a bit, but lately it has been a mutual admiration society interrupted by fierce competition on the field.
Maybe that old fire is back. Certainly Guillen seems to be tired of being asked about his team's ineffectiveness against the Twins. After all, Minnesota may have won five division titles in eight seasons, but the Sox have a World Series title in 2005.
Asked Tuesday if the Twins are inside his players' minds, Guillen scoffed.
"Since I got this job (in 2004)? No," he said. "I respect them as a team, I love the way they Vikings jersey
play the game, but in my mind, no. I can guarantee you, nobody in this game gives this team more love and credit than me. I respect them a lot. They should. But we've played well against them, and we'll continue to play well against them."

Tim Kawakami: Giants' Lincecum pays price for all those pitches

Colts jersey
Every other answer is an evasion. And the simplest answer is almost always the right one, as it is in this case.
This season, Lincecum has lost 3 to 5 mph on his fastball from his double-Cy Young peak in 2008 and 2009.
Which is why the Giants' ace has been far from an ace this season, possibly including tonight's start in St. Louis.
So, why in the world would a 26-year-old suffer such a nfl jerseys
drop in velocity?
Again, the simplest answer: Lincecum was pushed too hard the past two seasons, threw too many pitches at too young an age with too slight a frame, and the result is a decidedly less lively right arm in 2010.
By the way, Lincecum has his highest earned-run average (3.62) and highest WHIP (1.34) since his partial-season as a rookie in 2007.
He might need a rest, but of course, the Giants are in a pennant race and cannot afford to give him one.
Lincecum has been tagged with losses in his past three starts -- longest losing skid of his career -- and if he loses another one tonight, there surely will be 100 more views supplied by the Giants Universe.
You can say Lincecum has been wobbly since the trade of trusted battery mate Bengie Molina, that Lincecum lacks ideal conditioning, or that a communications gap with his father has triggered a crisis of confidence.
But Lincecum's difficulties all come back to losing that fastball, which has led to his pitches getting hit at a far greater rate than anyone is used to.
The math is just the math. It's simple. It's undeniable. It's not a hedge or a diversion.
From the start of the 2008 season to the start of action Friday, Lincecum has thrown 9,764 pitches, the third-highest total in baseball over that period.
According to my calculations, No. 1 is Justin Verlander (10,254 pitches) and No. 2 is CC Sabathia (10,150).
Notably, Lincecum (listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds) isn't built nearly as sturdily as Verlander (6-5, 225) and Sabathia (6-7, 290).
It's entirely plausible, and probable, that the large pitch-count has taken a toll on San Francisco 49ers jersey
Lincecum.
According to FanGraphs -- an amazing website that charts every pitch thrown in the majors, among other things -- Lincecum's average fastball in 2008 was 94.1 mph.
This year, his average fastball is down to 91.3 mph. That's a loss of almost 3 mph in two years, and if you've watched Lincecum pitch this season, it seems like he rarely hits even 91 any more.
And you know that he usually starts at 92 or 93 mph in the first inning but is down to 89-90 by the third or fourth innings.
That is absolute danger territory, and Lincecum has responded by throwing his fastball less and less.
Again according to FanGraphs, in 2008 Lincecum threw his fastball 66.1 percent of the time. This year, his fastball percentage is down to 55.5 percent.
Batters don't often swing-and-miss at his fastball these days and some do what the Cubs' Kosuke Fukudome did -- blast it into McCovey Cove last week.
Do you ever remember an iffy hitter like that turning on Lincecum's heater so easily?
We can safely assume that going from a high of 96 mph to a regular 91 mph fastball is a major difference, unless you want to tell me that Prime Dwight Gooden was pretty much the same as Every Day Jamey Wright.
Hitters also are a lot more prepared for Lincecum's changeup/split, though that's still a great pitch. He's throwing it more and more (13.4 percent in 2007, 23.8 percent so far this year), and it's less and less tricky without that fastball to set it up.
Now it's true that, given Lincecum's size, it was a miracle he could throw the ball that hard when he came up. It was inevitable that he would lose mph over time.
He has lost it a lot faster thanks to the work load.
It's probably time for the Giants and Lincecum to acknowledge the simple truth of Buffalo Bills jersey
his and start considering the proper remedies.
That is, unless he fires a no-hitter tonight, using 95-mph heat. But even then, it will probably only be a temporary reprieve from the very real -- and very simple -- symptoms that we all can see.

Giants report for series at Philadelphia Phillies

Colts jersey
About the Phillies: The two-time defending NL champs are getting back to full strength. Second baseman Chase Utley, who hasn't played since June 28 because of thumb surgery, is expected to be activated today. First baseman Ryan Howard (sprained ankle) also is eligible to come off the disabled list today nfl jersey
but might not be activated until Thursday. With those huge absences, it's no wonder the Phillies' fearsome lineup has sputtered at times. Pitcher Cole Hamels had their only hit Friday in a 1-0 loss against the Mets. But the Phillies' rotation is the most battle-tested in the league. They trimmed the Atlanta Braves' lead in the Chicago Bears jersey
NL East and are neck-and-neck with the Giants and Cincinnati Reds in the wild-card standings. The Giants won't see Roy Halladay, but Roy Oswalt is 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA in three starts since the Phillies acquired him from the Houston Astros. And after a rough first half, Hamels has a 1.81 ERA in his past seven starts. The Giants haven't won a series at Philly since 2004. They're 4-12 there since then.
Giants update: The team announced the signings of its first two selections in this year's draft, outfielders Gary Brown and Jarrett Parker. Brown was the 24th overall selection out of Cal State Fullerton. Parker, the 74th overall pick, played at the University of Virginia.
San Jose never recovered from a miserable first inning in which two errors and a wild pitch New Orleans Saints jersey
led to three runs on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. The Giants got as close as 4-2 on James Simmons' two-out, RBI single in the sixth, but failed to score again despite having runners on base in each of the final three innings.

Panthers’ Clausen likely to get needed prep time

Indianapolis Colts jersey
Here are a few of the whispers we've heard from around the NFC South:
• QB Matt Moore(notes) is expected to start in cheap nfl jerseys
Week Two, and a Panthers source says that's a good thing for rookie QB Jimmy Clausen(notes), who could use more time to prepare for the starting job that will inevitably be his in the not-too-distant future. Moore suffered a concussion in the season opener, but he returned to practice Wednesday.
• Falcons observers were surprised that 2009 first-round pick DT Peria Jerry(notes) was not in the starting lineup for the season opener. He may not be getting the push the coaching staff would like to see from him just yet. Jerry, who was brought along slowly in the preseason as he recovered from a leg injury, was involved in the rotation at tackle during the game, but it was Vance Walker(notes), a seventh-round pick in '09, who started alongside Trey Lewis(notes).
• The Buccaneers would like to get RB Kareem Huggins(notes) Chargers jersey
more involved on offense after he didn't get a single carry in Week One, but he'll likely continue to have his snaps limited until he improves his pass blocking. Huggins missed practice with a groin injury this week and he may not play vs. the Panthers on Sunday.
The Kansas City Chiefs ruled out defensive end Tyson Jackson(notes) and offensive tackle Ryan O'Callaghan(notes) for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns.
Both players were downgraded on the official injury report today.
Barry Richardson(notes) is slated to start on the right side in place of Bears jersey
O'Callaghan, who's been dealing with a groin injury.
Jackson's role should be filled by Wallace Gilberry(notes).

Urlacher will appeal fine

Indianapolis Colts jersey
Bears LB Brian Urlacher(notes) is planning to appeal a $5,000 fine he was assessed by the league for a late hit in Week One.
Urlacher was penalized for pushing Lions OG football jersey
Stephen Peterman(notes) after the whistle had blown, prompting a 15-yard personal-foul penalty
"First of all, I didn't hear the whistle," Urlacher told the Chicago Tribune on Indianapolis Colts jersey
Friday. "If they would have blown the whistle, I would have stopped. (Peterman) said he didn't even hear the whistle."
One of Urlacher's teammates, DE Julius Peppers(notes), was fined $5,000 for hitting Lions QB Matthew Stafford(notes) in the helmet. Peppers told the Tribune he wouldn't appeal his fine.
The way we see it
In terms of violence, Urlacher's push of Peterman wasn't severe by Dallas Cowboys jersey
any measure, but it clearly came after the whistle had blown. His appeal will rest on whether he can convince league officials that he couldn't have been expected to hear the whistle.

Raiders want to involve McFadden more in passing game

Here are several of the whispers that we've heard lately regarding the AFC West:
• With defenses focusing on nfl jerseys
shutting down TE Zach Miller, the Raiders are looking for another receiver to step up and fill the void in short-to-intermediate yardage situations. We're told the team is making an effort to get RB Darren McFadden(notes) more involved in the passing game. He could become a safety valve for QB Jason Campbell(notes) if he can stay healthy.
• There have been reports that the Broncos are in negotiations with CB Champ Bailey(notes), who will be a free agent after this season, on a new contract, but it doesn't appear that a deal is imminent. We're told Bailey badly wants to win a Super Bowl and he'd love to have a new contract. While he thinks the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Broncos could be a contender in the not-too-distant future, we hear Bailey won't limit his options by signing a deal before his contract expires unless Denver blows him away with a very lucrative offer.
• The Chargers immediately felt the loss of Kassim Osgood(notes) in their Week One loss at Kansas City. Osgood, who left for Jacksonville this offseason as a free agent, was a three-time Pro Bowler and widely regarded as one of the league's premier special-teamers. In the opener, San Diego allowed the Chiefs to gain an average of 32 yards on their five punt returns, including a 94-yard TD return by Dexter McCluster(notes).
• Flying under the radar last week following the Chiefs' stunning win was the unexpected resignation of team president Denny Thum. A member of the organization for 36 years and president since May 2009, Thum abruptly resigned from his post a day after Kansas City began its season, with no explanation as to why Minnesota Vikings jersey
he was stepping down. Chairman Clark Hunt, who assumes the additional title of CEO, will assume Thum's responsibilities until the club hires a new president.

San Jose 1-0 Philadelphia Union: Wondolowski Goal Lifts Quakes

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—In front of 8,109 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes (10-7-6, 36 pts) moved up Major League Soccer's Western Conference standings with a less-than attractive 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union (6-12-6, 24 pts) on Wednesday night.
First Half
In a free-flowing half, neither team was able to get an edge on the scoreboard. And, despite the up-and-down play, the number of chances were limited.
Philadelphia had the better of football jerseys
the quality chances with Stefani Miglioranzi leading the efforts. In the 22nd minute, Miglioranzi received a drop pass from Alejandro Moreno and hammered a shot from long distance. Quakes keeper Jon Busch laid out and stopped it.
In the 37th minute, Miglioranzi again ran onto a ball rolling away from goal. This time, from about 35 yards out, he drilled a shot that handcuffed Busch, but he was able to pounce on the rebound before any Union player could.
And in the 41st minute, the Union again had a solid chance go awry when Sebastian Le Toux found Moreno at the top of the box with an open lane to shoot. Moreno's strike wasn't as solidly hit as he would have liked, but it still was heading for the far post. Busch again made a diving effort to stop it from hitting the side netting.
San Jose had fewer chances, and they were far less threatening. In the eighth minute, Bobby Convey whipped a cross into the box that found Chris Wondolowski, but his shot was blocked and the rebound try by Geovanni was also blocked.
Wondolowski tried again in the 27th minute with a long range strike that trickled on goal, but Brad Knighton stopped it with relative ease.
Ad to conclude their chances, Khari Stephenson took a shot from near 40 yards in the 42nd minute that Knighton mishandled, leaving the ball for the taking. Wondolowski ran onto it, but as he met the ball, he was whistled for being Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
offside.
Second Half
Little happened in the opening stages of the second half. It wasn't until the 56th and 57th minutes when the Earthquakes had three consecutive corners and put pressure on the Union defensive unit. But their third attempt didn't prove to be a charm, instead it was simply a dud that went out for a goal kick, keeping it scoreless.
In the 62nd minute, Knighton finally showed some confidence in his play, racing off his line to punch away an Earthquakes cross that was heading right for Geovanni's head.
Then in the ensuing rush up the field, Shea Salinas, a former Earthquake, sent a ball to Fred at the top of the box, but his shot was off target.
Finally in the 69th minute, there was some action in a second half that was approaching new levels of boredom.
San Jose maintained control of the ball on the left flank. A cross sent into the box went all the way to the other side for Arturo Alvarez who sent it back into the box. Wondolowski was perfectly positioned and headed it with precision into the corner, just out of the reach of Knighton.
Philadelphia gave a little scare to the Quakes, but it was nothing they couldn't handle. Le Toux appeared to be through in the 83rd minute, but Busch came out to dive and knock the ball out of harm's way.
The Union had a number of corners over the next three minutes, but the Quakes defense toughened up and prevented any Union player to win a 50-50 ball, keeping them off the board.
With the Union pressing forward, the Quakes made a quick counter and almost capitalized. Convey got free up the left flank and sent a hard-hit, low cross that was just out of the reach of Eduardo and over the end line for a goal kick.
And in the 89th minute, Geovanni took a free kick from 30 yards out trying to extend the Earthquakes lead. His shot was heading for the upper 90, but Knighton laid out and pushed it over the bar.
In stoppage time, the Union had the final chance of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the game, but Busch came up with a solid stop to save the Quakes win. Philadelphia had a free kick on the end line outside of the box to Busch's right. In a scramble, the Union managed to put a shot on target, but Busch was in the right spot, grabbing the ball, preserving the clean sheet.

Stairs one-ups his old pal Giambi in a pinch

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

DENVER – In an increasingly button-down, walkup-music, cool-to-be-cool world, Matt Stairs(notes) and Jason Giambi(notes) come from a place where shaving is optional, a cold beer can be reward enough and one good, hard hack soothes the soul.
Giambi is coming up on 40. Stairs passed it a couple seasons back. They carry themselves as slightly used warriors bearing the scars of their summers, round in areas, gray in others.
They were raised on the same grounds. Giambi nfl jerseys
breezed through the minor leagues and surfaced with the Oakland A’s in the spring of 1995. Stairs, who hadn’t breezed at all, arrived a year later.
In five seasons by the bay, Stairs hit 122 home runs and drove in 385 runs. Giambi, in seven years there, had 187 home runs and 685 RBI. And they had a good time.
“We enjoyed being big leaguers,” is how Stairs put it.
Some 15 years later, they find themselves on opposite ends of the same division race, taking the at-bats where they come, often enough when the dew has gathered on the outfield grass, and the crowd is leaning in, and the closer has been waved in.
It’s a living, and a good one.
“It’s like being a closer,” Giambi said. “You gotta have that mentality enjoying being in pressure situations.
Tuesday night, the out-of-town scoreboard at Coors Field told them all the Philadelphia Phillies had won, the Atlanta Braves had lost and the San Francisco Giants would have to come back to win. They wouldn’t.
Here, the San Diego Padres sent Stairs to bat in the eighth inning, leading by a run. In 438 previous plate appearances as a pinch-hitter, he’d hit a record 21 home runs. He’d made a lot of outs.
Giambi sat in the Colorado Rockies’ dugout, along the first-base line, waiting his turn, making occasional trips to the indoor cage. He’s newer to the role, but made more capable in it when Stairs advised him to find a regular routine and to get after the first hittable pitch, because there might not be another. He’d hit a couple home runs in his first season coming off the bench, and win a couple games, and make a lot of outs.
In the final few weeks of September, as the National League West and wild-card races see leads and deficits change by the hour, Stairs and Giambi will have their say. They’ll be sent out cold to win games or lose them, to hunt fastballs and punish them with backspin. Or to bow their heads and wait for another day.
And so on an unseasonably warm night on Blake Street, with the Padres holding to a Dallas Cowboys jersey
half-game lead over the Giants and a 2½-game lead over the Rockies, Stairs and Giambi poured themselves into what would become a 7-6 Padres win.
Stairs dug a groove into the left-hander’s batters box with 11 choppy kicks with his left foot. He held his bat chest high and got three fastballs from Rafael Betancourt(notes). The third he hit over the center-field wall, Dexter Fowler(notes) left dangling vainly atop the fence.
Asked before the game what he knew about pitching to Stairs, Rockies lefty Joe Beimel(notes) had said, “That he crushes a fastball. No matter how hard you throw it you can’t throw it by him.”
Betancourt’s arrived at 93 mph, and left as a 6-3 Padres lead.
“As soon as your name’s called, I don’t care if you’re 22 or 42, the adrenaline comes,” Stairs had said, hours before he found his fastball.
Told about Beimel’s scouting report, Stairs smiled.
“You know it too, huh?” he said.
About those 20 years from 22 to 42, Stairs said, “The only thing that’s changed is you don’t see the inside fastball anymore.”
Betancourt’s was outside. Didn’t matter.
Six batters came and went in the Rockies’ eighth, and another four in the ninth before Giambi climbed the stairs from the dugout. He swung a lead stick over his head and eyed the Padres’ closer, Heath Bell(notes). Stairs had made his play, the Rockies had come back, and Rockies manager Jim Tracy was holding Giambi, trusting the moment would come.
He’d seen his Rockies, winners of 10 in a row before Monday night’s game against these Padres, rally back to within a run. Against Bell, they’d scored twice in the ninth, had a runner at first, and still hadn’t spent Giambi.
“I was waiting,” Tracy said. “Waiting.”
With more than 40,000 standing, they too waiting – on Giambi, on one more run, on another Rocktober – Giambi dug a little wider the gash Stairs had left. He held his bat higher, near shoulder level. He’s five inches taller than Stairs, maybe 40 pounds heavier, and tattooed.
“The book,” Padres manager Bud Black said, “says you don’t want the go-ahead run to get to first base. But, you find good closers have a knack to work their ways through an inning. I don’t know whether Heath was thinking that, but the way Giambi’s been swinging the bat … he looks to be locked in. In hindsight, it wasn’t a bad walk.”
On five pitches, Giambi did not swing. The game ended on the Indianapolis Colts jersey
next hitter, when Eric Young(notes) Jr. grounded into a double play, the tying and go-ahead runs stuck in the throats of those 40,000 folks.
The Padres led the West by 1½ games. The Rockies were 3½ games back.
Giambi left the home clubhouse with half a smile.
“See you tomorrow,” he said.

Broncos waive RB Brown with Maroney on board

Steelers jersey
The Broncos waived RB Andre Brown(notes) to make room for new RB Laurence Maroney(notes). Head coach Josh McDaniels, who has brought in several backs this year, announced the move Wednesday.
The Broncos traded a fourth-round pick in 2011 to New England for Maroney and nfl jerseys
a sixth-round pick in '11.
Brown was one of the Giants' final cuts in the preseason, and they could put in a claim to reacquire him. He orginally was a fourth-round pick of New York in 2009 but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury prior to his rookie season.
The way we see it
With the addition of Maroney, there was no room in a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
crowded backfield for Brown. He has shown flashes and likely will be picked up by another team, if not his old team, the Giants.
Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders(notes) is getting a second opinion on his injury suffered against the Houston Texans, which is reportedly a ruptured biceps tendon.
It was initially described as an elbow injury.
He's seeing Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., today.
Meanwhile, another oft-injured player, wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez(notes), has been ruled out with a high ankle sprain.
The Denver Broncos brokered an injury settlement with veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley(notes), removing him from injured reserve.
Stokley is now an unrestricted Minnesota Vikings jersey
free agent.
Meanwhile, the Broncos cut linebacker Worrell Williams(notes) from the practice squad and signed linebacker Titus Brown(notes) and defensive lineman Jeff Stehle(notes) to the practice squad.

Eagles’ Kolb, Bradley fail post-concussion tests

Steelers jersey
Eagles QB Kevin Kolb(notes) and LB Stewart Bradley(notes), both of whom suffered concussions in Sunday's loss to the Packers, have failed their concussion tests on Wednesday.
But head coach Andy Reid said both players were feeling better and that each "have made progress" since Monday.
Neither player will practice before Friday, Reid said. That could mean that QB cheap nfl jerseys
Michael Vick(notes), who had a strong second half replacing Kolb, could start against the Lions on Sunday. The Lions have injury problems of their own at quarterback, with Matthew Stafford(notes) (shoulder) out and backup Shaun Hill(notes) slated to start.
Bradley suffered his concussion when he collided with teammate Ernie Sims(notes) but was allowed to return to the field for a few plays before being removed for the duration. A report Monday suggested that Bradley was not seen by Eagles head trainer Rick Burkholder prior to returning to the field.
Kolb was slammed to the ground by Packers LB Clay Matthews(notes) on a scramble and was seen walking off the field slowly. He was allowed to throw three passes after that and was listed as having a jaw injury initially before he too was taken out of the game for good.
Per Reid's guidelines, both players likely would have to practice on Dallas Cowboys jersey
Friday in order to play this weekend. The NFL has attempted to take a stronger stance on concussion safety in the past year, requiring teams to consult with an independent neurologist following any kind of head injury. There also are stricter guidelines on players returning to the game after suffering any head trauma.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Moore(notes) has returned to practice three days after sustaining a concussion, making it possible he’ll play Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Coach John Fox says Moore “looked just like normal Matt” after being listed as limited in Wednesday’s workout. Fox would only say that Moore is “day to day,” but repeated that he’d start if healthy against the Buccaneers.
Moore threw three end zone interceptions and lost a fumble in Minnesota Vikings jersey
Carolina’s 31-18 loss to the New York Giants before getting knocked out of the game late in the fourth quarter following a sack. Rookie Jimmy Clausen(notes) replaced him and threw two incomplete passes.

Browns give no update on Delhomme

Colts jersey

CLEVELAND (AP)—The Browns are keeping Jake Delhomme’s(notes) injured right ankle under wraps.
The team did not provide a medical update on nfl throwback jerseys
Delhomme, who underwent an MRI on Tuesday after injuring his right ankle while throwing a game-swinging interception late in the first half of Sunday’s season-opening loss at Tampa Bay. It was the veteran’s debut with the Browns.
Delhomme played the entire second half on an ankle coach Eric Mangini described as being “twisted up” by his quarterback. A team spokesman said the Browns “will not have anything on Jake,” and declined to offer any other information.
The Browns host Kansas City on Sunday in their home opener. If Delhomme can’t play, backup Seneca Wallace(notes) could start against the Chiefs (1-0).
Mangini is expected to provide an update on Delhomme before practice Dallas Cowboys jersey
Wednesday. Delhomme, who threw two picks in Cleveland’s 17-14 loss, is also scheduled to speak with reporters as the Browns begin installing their game plan for the Chiefs.
Cleveland signed Delhomme as a free agent in March, days after trading for Wallace and releasing former starter Derek Anderson(notes). Wallace spent the previous seven seasons in Seattle with Browns president Mike Holmgren, who coached the Seahawks.
Wallace, who is 5-9 in 14 career NFL starts, also made his debut for the Minnesota Vikings jersey
Browns on Sunday, but not at quarterback. He lined up for four plays at wide receiver and caught one pass for 9 yards from Joshua Cribbs(notes) when the Browns went to their “Cyclone” package.

Angels beat Mariners 4-3 in 14th on Abreu’s HR

Indianapolis Colts jersey

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Most of the Fireworks Night crowd of 44,203 had long departed Angel Stadium by the time it was announced at the end of the 13th inning that the pyrotechnics would be postponed until Saturday. Bobby Abreu(notes) then unleashed some of nfl jersey
his own.
Abreu homered in the 14th to lift Los Angeles to a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, following up on Wednesday’s 16-inning victory over the Cleveland Indians.
The 30 innings in consecutive games tied an Angels franchise record, matching the mark set April 13-14, 1982, when they beat the Mariners 4-3 in 20 and 2-1 in 10 at Anaheim to begin a seven-game winning streak.
“It was a long game and we all wanted to end it and go home. But we also wanted to win it,” Abreu said after closer Fernando Rodney(notes) blew a 3-1 lead in the ninth for Jered Weaver(notes). “We deserved to get a win, especially with the way Weave pitched tonight.”
Working his second inning of relief, Brian Sweeney(notes) (1-2) retired his first batter in the 14th before Abreu drove the right-hander’s first-pitch fastball to left-center for his 18th homer. It was the ninth walkoff win for the Angels this season and the 11th loss for the Mariners in that fashion.
Rich Thompson(notes) (1-0), one of three consecutive Angels relievers trying to nail down their first major league victory, got the job done with two perfect innings after Jordan Walden(notes) and Michael Kohn(notes) each worked one inning.
“It was good to get Weaver out of the game and tie the ballgame up in the ninth against Rodney,” Seattle DH Russell Branyan(notes) said. “But the other guys who came out of their bullpen were tough. There were some guys I’d never seen before. I wish we could have had a better crack at them and done something with them.”
Jose Lopez(notes) and former Angels first baseman Casey Kotchman(notes) hit consecutive one-out RBI doubles in the ninth off Rodney. It was the fifth blown save opportunity in 13 chances this season for the right-hander, who inherited the closer’s job after lefty Brian Fuentes(notes) was traded to Minnesota on Aug. 27.
In Wednesday’s marathon win, Rodney gave up a tying RBI single to pinch-hitter Jayson Nix(notes) in the ninth before the Angels won it on Jeff Mathis’(notes) sacrifice fly.
Former Angels third baseman Chone Figgins(notes), who shifted to second after signing a $36 million, four-year contract with Seattle in the offseason, made a spectacular play in the 10th to keep the game going.
Mike Napoli(notes) hit a grounder up the middle with runners at first and second, but Figgins backhanded the ball behind the bag and made a no-look backhanded flip with his glove to shortstop Josh Wilson(notes), who completed the inning-ending double play.
Angels pinch-hitter Juan Rivera(notes) grounded into another inning-ending double play in the 12th with runners at first and second.
Weaver allowed an unearned run and five hits while lowering his ERA to 3.02, but remained winless in six starts since beating Detroit on Aug. 6.
“I’ve been saying for the last five weeks that I’m in a position where I can only do what I can do,” said Weaver, who was in the trainer’s room icing his arm when he saw the lead evaporate. “I go out there and pitch and try to keep us in the game. I was able to do Indianapolis Colts jersey
that tonight, and we just weren’t able to hang onto the lead. But the guys battled back and a big homer by Bobby helped us out.”
Weaver struck out six to raise his career-high total to 211 and regain the major league lead from Seattle’s Felix Hernandez(notes), who starts Saturday night against Ervin Santana(notes).
“I’ve said all along that he’s got great deception, he mixes his pitches and he’s smart with what he’s doing out there,” Branyan said. “I haven’t had a whole lot of luck against him. Tonight he was really getting me out of rhythm. He’s been doing it against us all year long. So he obviously has a plan and he’s sticking to it.”
David Pauley(notes) gave up three runs and five hits over 6 2-3 innings for Seattle in his 16th big league start. This was the first time in Pauley’s last four starts that his teammates scored a run while he was in the game.
But the 27-year-old rookie has nothing on Weaver, whose teammates managed only one run over his previous four outings—an eighth-inning solo homer by Torii Hunter(notes) last Saturday at Oakland. The Angels had totaled only 26 runs in Weaver’s previous 14 starts after beating the Cubs 12-0 at Wrigley Field on June 19.
Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki(notes) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a bunt single in the third and continued to second on catcher Mathis’ throwing error. It was Suzuki’s 2,214th big league hit, tying Joe DiMaggio for 167th place on the career list.
Suzuki took over the AL lead in hits by one over Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes). The Japanese star has led the majors in hits six times during his nine previous big league seasons and each of the past four.
The Angels took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Howie Kendrick’s(notes) sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mathis. Seattle got one of the runs back in the fifth when Kotchman singled, took third on Michael Saunders’(notes) single and continued home as Hunter’s one-hop throw from right field skipped past third baseman Alberto Callaspo(notes).
The error was only the fourth by Hunter in his last 407 games in the outfield, and the second for the nine-time Gold Glove winner since shifting from center field to right when Peter Bourjos(notes) was promoted from the minors on Aug. 3.
Mathis, who fouled out on a squeeze attempt Wednesday night before getting his game-ending sac fly, laid down a perfect bunt in the sixth as Erick Aybar(notes) scooted home with the Angels’ third run.
NOTES: Weaver has left with the lead in five of Dallas Cowboys jersey
his eight no-decisions. … Hunter’s error, which followed two by Mathis, increased the Angels’ season total to 100. … The Mariners’ offense reached the 1,000-strikeout mark for the third straight season and 11th time in the franchise’s 34-year history when Weaver fanned Adam Moore(notes) in the seventh inning.

Galarraga, Joyce together again

Indianapolis Colts jersey

Armando Galarraga(notes) and Jim Joyce crossed paths again Friday.
Joyce, the umpire whose blown call cost nfl jerseys
the Detroit Tigers pitcher a perfect game, was behind the plate for Galarraga's start against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park.
Both men tried to be low-key about the occasion, but they knew it would be difficult to put aside what happened June 2 in Detroit. That night, Joyce called Cleveland's Jason Donald(notes) safe on a play that should have been the 27th and final out of a perfect game by Galarraga.
"(Friday) was probably the second-hardest plate job of my life for the first three outs," Joyce said, comparing it to the game he called in Detroit the day after his mistake. "After those three outs, though, I felt like I could go back to being Jim Joyce the umpire."
Joyce said he only spoke to Galarraga to tell him when he was on his last warmup pitch before each inning.
"There's enough pressure on us without doing anything special today," he said. "He did his job, and I tried to do mine."
The pair publicly reconciled the afternoon after Minnesota Vikings jersey
Joyce's blunder, when Tigers manager Jim Leyland surprised the umpire by sending Galarraga to the plate with the lineup card. The pair hugged — a gesture that caused Joyce to tear up again. Joyce and Galarraga had one highly publicized meeting this summer, when they teamed up to present an award at the ESPYs.
That's why, like Joyce, Galarraga downplayed the emotions of Friday's game.
"I understand the hype — it was crazy what happened — but he's going to be behind the plate for me many, many more times," Galarraga said after getting a no-decision in Detroit's 6-3 loss. "I don't want to make it a big deal, and I'm sure he doesn't. He showed today that he is a professional — one of the best in the game."
The day's only sour note came before the game, when Joyce Dallas Cowboys jersey
apologized while telling media members that he had been told by Major League Baseball not to give interviews unless a request had been approved by the league office.
During the game, MLB spokesman Michael Teevan said in an e-mail that Joyce was free to speak after the game if he chose to, and the 54-year-old made himself available shortly after the final out.

Giants edge Padres; teams now separated by a percentage point

Indianapolis Colts jersey

On Aug. 25, the San Diego Padres had a 6 1/2-game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the National League West. Today, that lead is down to a single percentage point.
The Giants pulled almost even with a 1-0 victory Friday at San Diego's nfl jersey
Petco Park. San Francisco (80-62) has a .563 winning percentage; the Padres (79-61) are at .564, with two games remaining in the teams' four-game weekend series.
Jonathan Sanchez(notes) and five relievers combined on a three-hit shutout Friday. Juan Uribe(notes) drove in the game's only run with a fielder's choice grounder in the seventh inning.
"That's what we play all year for, the grind, all the stuff you go through all year long. It's what you wait for, to be within striking distance at the end of the year," Huff told reporters. "That's where we are. We've got a lot of ball left, though. We haven't won anything yet."
On the other side, the Padres are trying to stay Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
positive.
"We are fortunate to be where we are at right now with the way we have played the past three weeks," losing pitcher Clayton Richard(notes) said. "You have to look at it that we are still in first and we have played pretty poorly in the past three weeks." A 10-game losing streak in late August and early September eroded most of the Padres' division lead.
Huff's "dumb" baserunning, as he put it, turned out to be the key to the game. With one out in the seventh, he decided to advance to third base on Jose Guillen's(notes) ground ball to shortstop Miguel Tejada(notes). After looking toward first base, Tejada threw to third, but Huff slid in ahead of third baseman Chase Headley's(notes) tag. Huff then scored as pinch runner Nate Schierholtz(notes) was forced on Uribe's grounder to third.
"The way (Guillen) hit it, from the angle I was at, it looked like it was going to go in the hole anyway. … It's not a smart play, but it worked out," Huff told reporters.
Huff's charge surprised Tejada.
"In that situation, when somebody is at second, you never Dallas Cowboys jersey
go to third on that ball," Tejada told reporters. "In that situation it's a long throw to go to first. I made the decision to go to third. At that time, I think that's the best play. It is bad baserunning for him. He just got lucky. It was good hustle, too."

Blue Jackets sign top draft pick Johansen

Indianapolis Colts jersey

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Ryan Johansen to a standard three-year entry level contract.
General manager Scott Howson announced on Thursday the deal nfl throwback jerseys
with the 18-year-old Johansen, who was taken fourth overall in last summer’s draft.
He scored 25 goals and had 44 assists in 71 games with Portland of the Western Hockey League during the 2009-10 season. He ranked second among WHL rookies in points in the regular season, then added six goals and 12 assists in 13 playoff games.
Howson called Johansen a big part of Dallas Cowboys jersey
the franchise’s future.
Johansen will participate this weekend in a prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich.
A native of Port Moody, British Columbia, Johansen played Indianapolis Colts jersey
with Penticton of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2008-09.

Columbus Blue Jackets: 2010-11 preview

Indianapolis Colts jersey

Coach: Scott Arniel
Two years ago, Columbus garnered a franchise-high 92 points and qualified for the postseason for the first time in Ken Hitchcock’s second full year behind the bench. That season also yielded a Calder Trophy-winning goaltender in Steve Mason(notes) and a franchise star in football jerseys
Rick Nash(notes), who celebrated by signing an eight-year contract extension in the offseason.
But the Blue Jackets couldn’t sustain that momentum last year. An early flop, in which the team won just three times in a 24-game stretch, dropped the Jackets into a season-long funk and the Central Division basement for the first time since 2003.
“Last year, we took a step back—obviously,” Columbus general manager Scott Howson said. “We’ll have to make some improvement internally and we think our new, young, exciting staff will give us a boost and the rest will be up to the players.”
The Blue Jackets fired Hitchcock in February and replaced him four months later with Scott Arniel, who will begin his first stint as an NHL head coach. Arniel, who was recognized as the AHL’s top coach in 2008-09 when he led Manitoba, was brought on after Guy Boucher rejected Columbus’ offer in favor of one from the Steve Yzerman-led Tampa Bay Lightning.
“I’m thrilled to be one of 30 guys in the world with this job,” Arniel, 47, said. “This is something I’ve wanted since I decided to get into this profession, and I think the thing that will help me the most is my people skills. I can relate to players in today’s game and I can get them to believe that we can compete with the best.”
Even if Arniel is the perfect fit, the Blue Jackets’ fate will come down to what the players do on the ice. The franchise is fortunate to have a star in Nash, whose production slipped some last season as the team crumbled around him. He finished with 67 points—12 points short of the career high he set the previous year—but shined for Canada’s gold medal-winning Olympic team.
“He’s strong mentally, but I think he’s frustrated and the losing is becoming tiresome,” Howson said. “I think the Olympic experience was beneficial because he learned how to win under pressure.”
Columbus now needs Mason to rediscover his winning edge—and prove his Calder Trophy season was no fluke. Mason was 33-20-7 as a rookie with a 2.29 goals-against average and NHL-high 10 shutouts. But he looked nothing like that player last season, surrendering playing time to backup Mathieu Garon(notes).
“He went through a tough period,” Howson Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
said. “His second-half numbers were quite similar to what they were the year before—other than his wins. We think he was headed in the right direction later in the year and we fully expect him to bounce back and help us do the same as a team.”
The Blue Jackets can’t expect Mason and Nash to do it alone, and the good news is there are several candidates poised to step up.
Antoine Vermette(notes) had a career-high 65 points last year, ranking second on the team to Nash. Kristian Huselius(notes) was just two points behind Vermette, while R.J. Umberger(notes) had a personal-best 55 points. Jakub Voracek(notes) gave the team a fifth 50-point scorer for the first time in franchise history.
The keys up front could be two young players. Derick Brassard(notes), an impressive rookie two years ago, scored only nine goals in a tough sophomore season. Skilled 20-year-old winger Nikita Filatov(notes) returns to Columbus after playing most of last season in the KHL—eager to get a fresh start under new coach Arniel.
“Nash and Vermette had some chemistry, so I don’t see why I would change that,” Arniel said. “We need Umberger to keep rising after a breakout year and, after Brassard’s off year, we really need him to bounce back and be better.”
Most critical, however, will be getting the team’s goals-against average down. The Blue Jackets allowed 3.04 goals a game, ranking 24th in the league a year after being tied for ninth in that category.
Defenseman Mike Commodore(notes) played a key role for the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning Hurricanes, and knows how to win. He’ll lead a group of serviceable blue-line players that includes Fedor Tyutin(notes) and Jan Hejda(notes). Kris Russell(notes) and Anton Stralman(notes) have the potential to generate offense and assist the guys up front.
Offseason moves
Additions Nate Guenin(notes), D (Pittsburgh); Ethan Minnesota Vikings jersey

Subtractions Nathan Paetsch(notes), D (Florida); Greg Moore(notes), RW (Philadelphia).

Former Oilers captain charged with assault

Indianapolis Colts jersey

Jason Smith, who played 1,008 games over 15 seasons as an NHL defenseman, faces criminal charges in Calgary for domestic assault against his wife and teenage daughter.
According to the Calgary Herald, the formernfl jerseys
Edmonton Oilers captain has been charged with two counts of assault and one of unlawful confinement.
The family lives in Greely, Ontario, but was Dallas Cowboys jersey
spending the summer in Calgary. Smith, 36, was released on $1,000 bail and ordered to stay away from his family.
Smith was released shortly after his arrest and his lawyer, Alain Hepner, pointed out to reporters that Smith had no criminal record and the charges are “devastating” to him and his family.
Hepner wouldn’t elaborate on details of the allegations but emphasized there were no serious or permanent injuries and he is consulting with counseling experts on behalf of his client.
“There is another side to the Minnesota Vikings jersey
story — I can’t divulge anything yet,” Hepner told reporters. “The charges conjure up images so overdone and exaggerated … what’s conjured up by the allegations is not an accurate reflection of what will surface in the court case.”

2010 NFL Preview: Baltimore Ravens will win the AFC North if Joe Flacco plays better in the big game

Vikings jersey

STORYLINE: Three teams have legitimate shots at winning the division but the Steelers must start the year with QB Ben Roethlisberger serving a four-game suspension. The Ravens seem to have enough pieces - although Joe Flacco must play better in big games - while the Bengals, who stole the division a year ago, are banking that risky retreads like Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones can have the same success as Cedric Benson. The Browns? Wrong division.
BEST COACH: Mike Tomlin is probably the most popular coach football jerseys
with his players and not because he's a softie. Tomlin filled the shoes of Bill Cowher with a smooth transition to his style that didn't intrude on Steelers tradition. After winning a Super Bowl, he did well to get them to a 9-7 record amid a slew of injuries.
BEST PLAYER: Troy Polamalu missed 11 games with a knee injury last year and it cost the Steelers a spot in the playoffs. The high-energy, play-making safety is a force unto himself and he makes everyone else on the Steelers defense better. There is no better example of athleticism, brains and instincts on any other team.
DON'T BE SURPRISED IF: Jake Delhomme takes advantage of his second chance with the Browns. Mike Holmgren's arrival as team president in Cleveland means the Browns will play a hybrid of the West Coast offense and the Patriots' system that head coach Eric Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll were weaned on. It's made Delhomme's reads easier and through preseason, his QB rating was up near 116 with his completion percentage in the upper 70s.
KEY ADDITION: Never happy being overshadowed by Larry Fitzgerald on Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the Cardinals, Anquan Boldin comes to Baltimore expected to be the missing link to an AFC championship. Boldin was quiet in the preseason until he caught four passes for 58 yards and a TD from out of the slot position against the Giants.
KEY SUBTRACTION: Shayne Graham missed a pair of field goals that could have affected the outcome of the Bengals' playoff loss to the Jets and ultimately ended his career in Cincinnati. He signed a one-year deal with the Ravens, but was beaten out by Billy Cundiff. Ex-Jet Mike Nugent beat out Dave Rayner for Graham's old job.
X-FACTOR: Terrell Owens just may have found a home in Indianapolis Colts jersey
Cincinnati where he and Chad Ochocinco should at least provide a few amusing moments. Outside of Ocho, the Bengals receiving corps was impotent last year. An inspired T.O. could end up being a lot more than an emergency replacement for the costly signing mistake that was Antonio Bryant. Or he could be a distraction.

2010 NFL Preview: New look in NFC East as ex-Eagles QB Donovan McNabb moves to Washington Redskins

Vikings jersey

STORYLINE: The Redskins finally have a coach and a quarterback in Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb, but all has not started well with the new boss' feud with big DT Albert Haynesworth. Meanwhile, with McNabb down the road, much to the delight of plenty of nfl jerseys
Eagles fans, the Kevin Kolb era begins in Philly. Can the Giants' defense, an outright embarrassment last year, revive under new coordinator Perry Fewell and can the Cowboys' offense be as punchless as it has looked in the preseason?
BEST COACH: Not Wade Phillips. Mike Shanahan and Tom Coughlin have rings but Andy Reid and his staff get the most out of the Eagles year after year. This season will test the wisdom of trading McNabb within the division, especially with so many experts predicting doom for a team that went 11-5 last year. Reid's on the hot seat for one of the few times in his career.
BEST PLAYER: New Jersey product Miles Austin had a breakthrough 2009 season that put him on the verge of superstardom, not to mention a mega-contract. It remains to be seen if the receiver's relationship with Tony Romo is as cozy as the one he's been having with Kim Kardashian.
DON'T BE SURPRISED IF: Anything happens in Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the NFC East - good or bad for any team. It's always volatile, especially with the Redskins thrown in as an X-factor this year. If the Cowboys and Giants sputter badly, job security may be an issue for Phillips and Coughlin. Coughlin's red face could conflict with the drab gray color scheme at the new stadium.
KEY ADDITION: McNabb is a definite upgrade for the Redskins. They have been lacking a field general seemingly forever. But his preseason start doesn't bode well. He missed time with hamstring injury and considering his injury history the last few years, it raises questions about his durability.
KEY SUBTRACTION: The Cowboys let Flozell Adams walk away as a free agent and it could be one of the best things to happen to Jerry Jones' talented but underachieving club. Adams was the focal point for all the stupid and undisciplined things the Cowboys have done to sabotage themselves over the years.
X-FACTOR: The Eagles not only have to replace McNabb, Dallas Cowboys jersey
but also Brian Westbrook. That's going to fall on second-year RB LeSean McCoy, who had somewhat of an uneven camp and has battled a quad injury. McCoy saw time last year and averaged 4.1 yards per carry while setting the team's rookie rushing record. It will be different as a feature back, however, especially if McCoy is to help solve the Eagles' short-yardage and goal line issues.

2010 NFL Preview: New York Jets must fend off Patriots and Dolphins if they want to rule AFC East

Vikings jersey

STORYLINE: If the Jets weren't the chic pick to get to the Super Bowl before, they were after "Hard Knocks." But are they a bit overhyped, especially with a so-far sputtering Mark Sanchez-led offense? The Patriots have plenty of internal issues and what could be cheap nfl jerseys
an unhappy locker room but they do know how to win. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are lying in the weeds and the Bills, hopeful under new coach Chan Gailey, are simply trying to get up.
BEST COACH: Bill Belichick's rings have picked up a little tarnish lately (it's been six seasons since his last title) and Rex Ryan has proven to be his mental match. But until Ryan collects a little hardware, the surly, droll Belichick is still the gold standard. Belichick goes into this season without an official offensive or defensive coordinator so it's all on him.
BEST PLAYER: Jet hater Tom Brady's reconstructed knee shouldn't be an issue with a full season (4,398 yards, 28 TD passes) behind him. He looked sharp all preseason and he should have Randy Moss and Wes Welker healthy. Some feel he may be less committed since his marriage to supermodel Gisele Bundchen but that shouldn't be the case. If anything, Brady could start the season more motivated than ever.
DON'T BE SURPRISED IF: The Dolphins end up stealing the division from under the Patriots' and Jets' noses. Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby upgrade both sides of the ball and the young offensive line is as good a run-blocking unit as there is. Chad Henne Minnesota Vikings jersey
is primed for a breakout year.
KEY ADDITION: The Dolphins are hoping that bad boy Marshall, acquired from the Broncos for a pair of draft picks, can put them over the top. Marshall (three straight 100-catch seasons) is not a burner but he's one of the premier receivers in the game and as such, demands double teams. Any hijinks and he'll eventually have to answer to Bill Parcells.
KEY SUBTRACTION: Running back Thomas Jones signed with the Chiefs when it was obvious the Jets were going to go with Shonn Greene. Greene pretty much took over the spot during the playoffs and his injury in the AFC Championship Game stunted the Jets' attack. It's not often a team can shrug off a back who gained 1,400 yards the previous season, but that's the case here.
X-FACTOR: The Jets defense is good Indianapolis Colts jersey
enough to get them back into the playoffs. It will be up to Mark Sanchez to get them any further. Sanchez had a fine postseason but the wraps were still on him. At some point, the Jets are going to have to expand the offense and Sanchez is going to have to play like a first-rounder. He didn't look like one in the preseason.

Jaguars’ Lewis wants to be league’s top tight end

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Marcedes Lewis(notes) knows the perception: He’s an underrated player in an undersized market, overshadowed by his longtime teammate and often overlooked by colleagues.
He believes it’s time for that to change.
Lewis wants to prove he’s the best all-around tight end in the NFL, capable of football jersey
blocking defensive ends, beating linebackers down the field and becoming quarterback David Garrard’s(notes) go-to guy.
He already has the Jacksonville Jaguars convinced. Coach Jack Del Rio calls him the “most dominant player on our football team.” That’s still not enough for Lewis.
“I’m trying to separate myself,” he said. “There are guys who can really block and can catch OK, and there are guys who can really catch and can block OK. I want to be able to do both at a high level, and I want everybody to recognize it. I take that very seriously.”
Lewis took a step toward his goal last season. He caught 32 passes for a career-high 518 yards and two touchdowns. Not staggering numbers, especially when compared to elite tight ends Antonio Gates(notes), Dallas Clark(notes), Jason Witten(notes), Vernon Davis(notes) and Tony Gonzalez(notes).
But the 6-foot-6, 275-pound Lewis averaged 16.2 yards a catch, tops for tight ends and better than most of the league’s star receivers.
“We feel like he has a chance to continue to blossom for us and become a real weapon,” Del Rio said. “He’s been absolutely sensational—blocking, catching, leading, sending the right message with his actions. Really proud of the start he’s had.”
Lewis insists he’s just getting starting.
A former UCLA standout and 28th pick in the 2006 NFL draft, Lewis spent his first two offseasons back on the West Coast. Instead of working out with his Jacksonville teammates, he was hanging out with family and friends. The Jaguars never complained, even though they knew Lewis wasn’t maximizing his potential.
Lewis, though, heard the whispers. He also watched the team go through significant changes. Jacksonville parted ways with dozens of veterans—most notably running back Fred Taylor(notes), linebacker Mike Peterson(notes) and defensive tackle Marcus Stroud(notes)—and Lewis realized he needed to do more to avoid a similar fate.
So he stuck around, spending more time in Minnesota Vikings jersey
the weight room, more time in the video room, more time on the practice field and more time with his teammates.
“It’s just time,” he said. “I’ve sat back, I’ve paid my dues. I came into the league and they were like, ‘I don’t know if he’s going to be able to block.’ I focused on it and proved I could do that. Then it was, ‘We don’t know if he can stretch the field.’ I focused on it, and last year, I stretched the field.
“This is the year that I bring both. Just so everybody understands, I can do both. This is something that I’ve worked very hard for.”
If he sounds serious, it’s because he is.
Lewis, who’s never been much of a rah-rah guy or a showboat, is a proud man who love to talk about his hometown, the woman who raised him as a single mother or the very detailed tattoo on his chest—a Mount Rushmore of important male role models in his life. The mural features Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, President Obama and Lewis’ great grandfather.
He models his leadership methods after them.
“I’m not about to get up in your face,” Lewis said. “I do it in my own special way. I just try to lead by example. If I need to say something, I’ll say something. It’ll be a few words and it’ll mean something and they’ll know that I’m serious.
“I’m not one of those guys who talk just to be making noise and there’s no substance to it. That makes no sense and you get no respect from your teammates if you’re that type of guy.”
Lewis is getting plenty of respect from his teammates these days. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew(notes), who has played three college seasons and four NFL seasons alongside Lewis, estimates that more than 75 percent of his yardage at UCLA came while running behind Lewis.
So he’s glad to see Lewis starting to get more attention.
“He’s been coming into his own for a long time and now everyone else is starting to see it,” Jones-Drew said. “I’m just happy for him because he deserves it.”
Lewis doesn’t mind the hype. After all, he Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
has lofty goals.
“I just want to be that guy that’s accountable, that everybody on the team can look to and be like, ‘OK, we know what he’s going to do all the time. We know what to expect out of him every Sunday and we’re going to get it,”’ Lewis said. “I don’t want to be a blinking light. I want to be a shining light.”
